Students learned about the color wheel and different color relationships.
They made collages with colored construction paper to show complementary colors, warm colors, and cool colors. They also gained skills in tracing and cutting geometric and organic shapes.

Exploring Senses Through Art
For four weeks, first graders explored smell, touch, hearing, and sight through artmaking.
Smell
Students smelled mystery objects and drew what they thought it was. At the end of class the mystery smells were revealed, which included vanilla bean, pepper, cinnamon, garlic, and anise. Hear
We read "The Noisy Paint Box" by Barb Rosenstock about Kandinsky, who made abstract art inspired by music. Students listened to different music and made watercolor painting inspired by the music. |
Touch
Students made texture rubbings of different objects. We also found different textures around the room, like the grate on the door. To make a texture rubbing, you place and object under your sheet of paper, and then rub a crayon on top to capture the object's texture. See
